Depleted explores the century of research linking potassium deficiency to disease and mortality — and the medical establishment's consistent refusal to act on it. Potassium may be the single most important, most overlooked element in human biology, essential to nearly every cell and organ, yet 98% of Americans are deficient and hypertension now affects over 80% of adults over 60. Board-certified physician Dave Clayton, MD exposes why this evidence never made it into expert guidelines — and gives you a simple, evidence-based way to reclaim your health.

For readers of Peter Attia's Outlive, Chris van Tulleken's Ultra-Processed People, and Casey Means' Good Energy.

Why I Wrote This Book (?)

A career I built, and walked away from (?)

Just a few years ago, I was riding a successful career in medicine. I had left a prestigious practice on Manhattan's Upper East Side to move to La Jolla, CA, where I worked at one of Southern California's top health systems. It was there that my research led me to a century-old secret to health and longevity, hidden in plain sight among thousands of research papers that never see the light of day.

Excited to share this with my patients, I embarked on a crusade that earned me no laurels — instead, it made me unemployable at large health systems. But there were other ways to spread my message. I turned to social media, posting my ideas on YouTube and reaching an audience in the millions. As success stories rolled in from around the world, I rededicated my life to changing the way we treat the single most prevalent disease in the developed world.

"In the 1960s, dozens of people were rushed to emergency surgery when Big Pharma tried to hijack potassium and monopolize its use. Rather than force them to pay the price for their malfeasance, the FDA banned not the drug, but the essential element that would have made their drugs obsolete."

Since that time, over 98% of the U.S. population has become deficient in this mineral, and hypertension — the most common chronic disease in America — now affects nearly 80% of older adults, outpacing both diabetes and obesity. Despite an enormous body of evidence, the curative potential of potassium remains notably absent from medical school curricula, educational conferences, and expert guidelines.

About the Author

A crusade that cost him a career — and reached millions instead

David Clayton, MD, MBA, is a board-certified internist whose work focuses on hypertension, nutrition, and preventive medicine. Over the past decade, he has devoted thousands of hours to investigating the scientific literature on potassium and cardiovascular health — a century of research that convinced him potassium plays a far more significant role in hypertension and healthy aging than current medical practice recognizes.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Clayton is an educator with a substantial public platform. His YouTube channel has attracted more than 165,000 subscribers and 13 million views through evidence-based videos on potassium, blood pressure, longevity, bone health, and nutrition.

Before entering medicine, Dr. Clayton earned an MBA from Columbia University and worked in healthcare banking in New York City. He later received his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School after completing a bachelor's degree in chemical biology at Stevens Institute of Technology. He is also the author of The Healthy Guide to Unhealthy Living (Simon & Schuster) and Mastering Health from the Inside Out.
